Abstract
Background: Depression adversely affects daily living and is typified by low mood& decreased interest. Suicide behaviors are divided into four categories: suicidal ideation or suicidal thinking, suicidal plan, suicidal threat, and suicidal attempt. Aim of the study: This istudy iaims ito iassess irelationship ibetween suicidal behavior and perceived social support among patients with depression. Research design: This study used descriptive icorrelational iresearch idesign. Setting: The current study was conducted at the Outpatient psychiatric Clinic in Al-Fayoum General Hospital. Sample: A convenience sample of (132) from psychiatric patients. Data collection tools: three tools were used for collecting the data I: Socio-demographic data and medical history sheet, II: suicidal behavior questionnaire-revised scale and III: multidimentional scal of perceived social support. Results: The results of this study showed that, nearly two third of studied patients had suicidal behavior and nearly three fifth of studied samples had low level of social support. There was statistically significant relation between suicidal behavior with educational level, income and job of studied samples. Also, there was statistically significant relation between total levels of perceived social support with educational level, income and residence of studied samples. Conclusion: There was negative correlation between suicidal behavior and perceived social support among patients with depression. Recommendations: Screening for early detection of risk factors for suicide can lead to referral and early intervention. And also, assessing for perceptions of social support from close friends& family.
