Effect of Hormonal Contraceptive Methods on Women's Sexual Function

Abstract

Background: Sexuality is fundamental for the maintenance of health and wellbeing. Various hormonal contraceptive methods have been associated with changes in sexual function. Aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of hormonal contraceptive methods on female sexual function. Design: A descriptive, comparative and correlational design. Setting: The study was conducted at outpatient clinic of obstetric and gynecological department in Benha university hospital. Sample: a purposive sample consisted of 250women using hormonal contraceptive methods Tools: Two tools were used; Tool(I): structured interviewing questionnaire, Tool(II): The female sexual function Index . Result: As regards Total mean score of the studied women’s sexual function, the present study findings represented that the total mean score of sexual function among the studied women is x ±SD= 53.50 ± 15.5 (Total score is 95). In addition to the presence of a highly statistically significant difference, at P = 0.000. Conclusion: women using hormonal contraceptive methods were reported negative effects on sexual function.Recommendations: family planning counseling is required for all women to be aware about the sexual acceptability of hormonal contraceptive methods. So this finding emphasizes the importance of sexual counseling as part of family planning counseling.
