Abstract
Background: Nurses play a vital role in the prevention of deaths related to cardiac emergencies by administering cardiac emergency drugs. So, nurses have sufficient pharmacological knowledge for the proper administration of cardiopulmonary resuscitation drugs to prevent medication errors. Aim of the study: The present study aimed to assess critical care nurses' performance toward resuscitative medication administration. Research Design: A descriptive exploratory design was used. Settings: The study was carried out in different critical care units at Helwan University Badr Hospital in Cairo, Egypt Sample: Convenience sample of all available (80) nurse worked at critical care units. Tools: Tool (1): Nurse’ self-structured questionnaire consisted of two parts: Part I: Nurses demographic characteristics data. Part II: Nurses knowledge assessment questionnaire. Tool (II): resuscitative medications observational checklist. Results: 58.8% of the studied nurses had a poor level of total knowledge about resuscitative medication, while 25% of them had good level of total knowledge and 16.2% had an average level,63.7% of the studied nurses had a poor level of practice regarding resuscitative medication ,while 22.5% had an average and 13.7% had good level Conclusion: there is a statistically significant relation between nurses’ knowledge and their year of experience in the critical care units, a highly statistically significant difference between levels of practice regarding resuscitative medication. Recommendations: developing strategies for dealing with resuscitative medication administration; as well, providing continuous in-service educational programs on quality and safety that are required for nurses to maintain a safe work environment and safety.
